Dyslexia Assessment Process

1. Initial Contact

During the initial contact, we will have a short discussion to understand your concerns and the purpose of the assessment session, which may include diagnostic clarity, school support, or exam access. We will also provide guidance on which type of dyslexia assessment is most appropriate, along with a detailed report outlining the findings.

2. Pre-Assessment Information

Parent questionnaire – gathering developmental history, family background, and your observations is vital for the assessment session.

Visual screener – completed by both parents and the student, this tool helps identify any visual stress or related issues, contributing to a comprehensive dyslexia assessment.

School questionnaire – filled out by the teacher who knows the student best or the SENCo, this provides crucial insights into classroom learning and the support already in place, forming part of the detailed report.

Additionally, please collect any relevant school reports, previous assessments, or samples of work to aid in our initial contact.

3. Assessment Session

The assessment session is conducted face-to-face with the student in a calm, encouraging environment. Typically, the session lasts around 3–4 hours, with breaks as needed. A variety of SASC-approved, standardized tests are utilized during the dyslexia assessment to provide a detailed report on the student's learning profile. These tests cover essential areas such as: reading accuracy and fluency, spelling and written expression, working memory and processing speed, and underlying phonological and language skills.

4. After the Assessment

It's time to ask questions and discuss first impressions following the assessment session. A detailed report will be provided within 2–3 weeks after the initial contact regarding your dyslexia assessment.

5. The Report

This detailed report explains the student’s learning profile in clear language, highlighting both strengths and difficulties. Following an assessment session, it provides tailored, practical recommendations for school and home. Additionally, it can be used as evidence for exam access arrangements, where appropriate, especially in the context of a dyslexia assessment during the initial contact.

6. Follow-Up

We offer an optional feedback meeting to discuss the detailed report from your dyslexia assessment and outline the next steps. Additionally, ongoing advice or referral to further support will be available if needed following our initial contact.
